About Kefallonia

Kefallonia, (also known as Kefalonia, Kefallinia, Cephallonia, Cephallenia) is the largest of the Ionian islands, located in western Greece.

Map

The capital of Kefallonia is Argostoli (Population = 45,000) is a busy working port with ferries, private yachts and freight ships coming and going all year round.

The island is covered by dense vegetation and offers plentiful natural beauty including beaches and spectacular caves.

Myrtos, the most famous of these beaches, is a major tourist attraction, and has been ranked fifth worldwide for its scenic view.

At a short distance from Sami (3.5km) we find the Melissani Lake. A large part of the roof has caved in, affording the visitors who looks down from above a superb view of the extraordinary colours of the water, particularly during the mid-day hours when the sun is directly overhead. Along the walls of the cave are many stalactites.

A large number of tourists visit Kefallonia during the peak season, but as one of the largest islands in Greece, it is well-equipped to handle them. Most tourists stay in or around Lassi, a serene area a few kilometres from Argostoli, and their numbers have increased since the best-seller “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” was made into a movie (2001), shot on the island itself.

The Elios Valley, covered by endless vineyards, olive groves and orchards, extends to the sandy, exotic beaches at Koroni, Katelios and Skala.

Car hire is definitely recommended to see the diversity of Kefallonia and to really appreciate its landscape and attractions.
